Why You Should Keep Your Gas Tank At Least Half Full
Sometimes More is More
Stay Safe This Winter: Avoid the Risks and Prepare for the Unexpected
How it works
Having more fuel in your tank reduces the amount of air space, which in turn minimizes condensation. When there’s too much air in the tank, moisture can form and settle at the bottom, where it may lead to issues. Water is heavier than gasoline, so it can cause problems for both the fuel system and the tank if ice crystals develop or if rust flakes detach and travel through the fuel line. Low gas could also mean that your fuel pump starts sucking air and overheating. That is as bad as it sounds. Avoid those preventable repairs.
Preparation not panic
Ensure you have enough gas to keep your engine running in an emergency, as you may need to keep warm. Don’t risk getting stranded with a nearly empty tank, especially since it might take a while for emergency vehicles to reach you. Note that an emergency kit is a good idea, with extra coats and a blanket so you can run the engine just enough to remove the chill, but conserve the gas. Your car will serve as shelter until you’re found so you should make sure it’s ready for that job.
Sufficient fuel can also be crucial if you get stuck in traffic. Avoid the embarrassment of being the person who has to pull over because their tank ran dry.
Other things to consider: With a tank half full, you don’t need to panic if something ‘comes up’ and you have to drive out of your way or if you’re running late. It also gives you the flexibility to choose when and where to fill up, allowing you to avoid long lines or higher prices if you’re caught off guard. While it may not be the most critical decision you’ll face this week, it can certainly make your day a little easier.
Are you planning a long drive? Don’t rely solely on an app to guide you to gas stations—they might be under construction or no longer exist. The backup plan is having enough in the tank to get to the next station.
Winter is tough enough, take the easy route
A smooth and safe winter driving experience means keeping your gas tank at least half full—this not only prevents vehicle problems but also keeps your peace of mind topped up as well.
