Summer Car Driving = Summer Car Maintenance Checks
Cooling System: Coolant levels should be checked and topped off if needed. Hoses should be checked for cracks, bulges, or leaks. Test the radiator cap and thermostat. Summer heat puts extra strain on your cooling system, and overheating is one that can be avoided.
Tires: Check pressure when tires are cool (hot weather increases pressure). Underinflated tires can blow out more easily on hot pavement. Do you see your tread depth? Any signs of uneven wear, cracks, or bulges? Let us know if you need help.
Air Conditioning: Test it before you need it. We can check refrigerant levels, inspect belts for fraying, and replace the cabin air filter if it’s dirty (that determines the quality of air and what you’re breathing in your car). Failing AC is more than uncomfortable – it can be dangerous in extreme heat.
- Battery and Electrical: Are your battery terminals clean of corrosion? Heat shortens battery life more than cold, but the battery’s charge capacity can be tested. Make sure belts and hoses around the engine don’t show signs of wear…before the vacation drive.
Fluids: Before the summer vacation drive, the oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid should be checked. Hot weather can cause fluids to evaporate or break down faster. And, make sure your windshield washer fluid is good and full for cleaning off bugs and road grime.
Visibility: Clean your windshield inside and out. Sun coming through a dirty glass can really reduce visibility. While you’re at it check wiper blades for streaking, and ensure all lights are working properly. Summer storms can hit suddenly with heavy rain. Ask us about Aquapel to help with the rain!
Emergency Kit: We don’t sell them, but we certainly recommend one! Stock extra water for both you and your radiator, sunscreen and a first aid kit (for you), and jumper cables, and basic tools. Consider adding a portable phone charger and emergency cash.
