Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard?

Very important information about tires as reported on 20/20. ABC News went undercover to find out how aged tires affect driving performance. Tires that are sold as new and have never been used may still be past their shelf life. Find out how to tell the difference and stay safe.

Snow Tires On Your Agenda? We've Got Storage!

Don't get caught spinning your tires, stuck in the driveway, or sliding towards an intersection. Now is the time to think about snow tires. Old Man Winter is coming, but you can face him with the right traction.

All season tires tend to stiffen and lose gripping power around zero degrees Celsius. Retention of traction on icy or snow-covered roads is critical to safety as the temperature drops! That takes the right tire.

A proper winter tire can improve braking by up to 25% over all season radials, and can improve collision avoidance by about 38%. Now that's piece of mind!

In deep snow, winter treads improve traction by allowing the tire to rid itself of snow as it rolls, giving it a clear bite on the road, and keeps you moving.

Today, winter tires are made of new rubber compounds that can handle not only ice and snow but cold, dry, wet, or slushy driving conditions. They also run quietly, unlike the old rumbling tires of yesteryear.

As a general rule, to maintain control and stability of your vehicle, install identical tires on all wheels. Avoid mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal construction or size, unless specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Tires: Are Yours Properly Inflated?

One of the benefits of properly inflated tires is better fuel efficiency and that translates into fuel savings and fewer emsisions. According to the Rubber Association of Canada, you should check your tires "at least once a month".  Not only do you benefit from fuel savings, but also extended tire life and improved vehicle handling. For example: one tire underinflated by only 8 psi can reduce the life of the tire by 15,000 km and can increase the vehicle's fuel consumption by 4%. Now that's savings you should enjoy! At AE Auto Plus we routinely check your tires on every visit.
